Willow Flute

The natural world gives us so many things. We can find food, water…and music? That’s right! This is your chance to make a willow flute and create your own natural music.

Here is what you will need:
• Willow stick
• Knife
• Glass of water

The flute is the oldest type of musical instrument in the world. In Medieval Times, flutes made out of willow trees were used by shepherds to pass away the time and calm the flocks.

Flutes are still heard today but most of today’s flutes are made out of silver or gold. The flute is used in orchestras, wind bands, and jazz bands. They make a soft and hallow sound and are played by blowing across the blowhole.

SAFETY TIP: You are going to need some help with this activity because you will be working with a knife to make your flute. Ask a trusted adult to help you.
