Make your own telescope

The naked eye can actually see quite a bit in the night sky but there’s plenty more you could see if only you had something to magnify the stars, moons and planets. There are all sorts of binoculars and telescopes out there for star gazers, but let’s face it – they’re expensive and not all that easy to just toss into your backpack! Boppa has a trick up his sleeve that’s just the thing for a homemade telescope.  Just follow his instructions and make a telescope using some ordinary things from around your house!

What you’ll need:

  • Curved shaving or makeup mirror (the kind that magnifies the reflection)
  • Small standard flat mirror
  • Magnifying glass

Tips:

Your eyes take time to adjust from light to the darkness. To make this adjustment easier, try wrapping a thin red sock, stocking, tissue paper or cellophane over your flashlight when you need light to read star maps or just to see where you’re going - Your eyes and feet will thank you!
