Animal Tracks

Build It

Build a track catcher

All kinds of animals live in the woods and backyards of our neighbourhoods. Sometimes we don’t see them because they are scared of humans or because they only come out at night. A track catcher is an excellent way to find out what animals are walking around your neighbourhood when you are not around.
Here’s what you will need for your track catcher:

• 4 pieces of wood that are each at least 2 feet long and 2 inches wide. The thickness of the wood can vary. If wood is not available, the lid of a large cardboard box can be used instead.
• A bowl
• Hammer and nails
• Sand or soil
• Water

Bait can be used to lure an animal to the track catcher. Find out what types of animals live in your neighbourhood and what kind of food they eat. If the weather has been really dry where you live, water may be all the bait that you need.

If you are going to use bait, be sure to set up your track catcher a good distance from where humans are living! It’s safer for you and for the animal.

Position your track catcher on flat ground. This will prevent the animals from slipping and will give you a better chance of getting a great track!

Now, let’s get out there and discover who else is living in our neighbourhood!
